Frequently asked questions
Will I lose control or do something embarrassing?
No. Stage hypnosis is entertainment clinical hypnotherapy is different. You remain aware and in control throughout. You cannot be made to say or do anything you would not normally consent to. You can open your eyes and end the session at any point.
What if I cannot be hypnotized?
Most people can enter a hypnotic state. The main factor is willingness to participate, not susceptibility. Skepticism is fine active resistance is the only thing that prevents results. We discuss this during your initial phone consultation, and if I don't think it will work for you, I'll tell you.
How many sessions will I need?
It depends on what you're working on. Smoking cessation is usually handled in one to two sessions. Anxiety, weight management, and deeply ingrained habits often take four to six. I give an honest estimate during the consultation I don't book open-ended packages.
Is hypnotherapy covered by insurance?
Most plans do not cover hypnotherapy directly. Some FSA or HSA accounts may. Payment is due at time of service. Call to ask about current rates.
How is this different from therapy or counseling?
Hypnotherapy is not psychotherapy and I am not a licensed therapist. I work with specific, goal-oriented behavioral and habit change. If your situation calls for licensed mental health care, I will tell you honestly rather than take your money for something better handled elsewhere.
Do you offer phone or video sessions?
I prefer in-person for the first session, particularly because the induction process works better in a controlled environment. Some follow-up sessions can be done by phone. Ask during the consultation.
What should I do to prepare?
Arrive having eaten not full, not hungry. Wear comfortable clothing. Come with a specific goal in mind, not a vague desire to "feel better." The more clearly you can articulate what you want to change, the more useful the first session will be.
Is hypnotherapy safe?
Yes. Clinical hypnotherapy has an excellent safety record. It is not recommended as the primary intervention for active psychosis or certain dissociative disorders if you have a psychiatric diagnosis, mention it during the consultation so we can discuss whether hypnotherapy is appropriate.
